For the anyone looking for the math behind the Volt:

[Warning…this is boring]

Last Tank: 1/4/12 - 4/20/12
3357 Miles
7.6 Gallons of gas

7.6 Gallons * 38 MPG = 288.8 Miles on gas
@ $3.449 (Average price of gas on 1/4/12) = $26.21

3068.2 Miles on electricity
- 32kWh * 31 = 992kWh [ I get 32kWh / 100 miles ]
@ ($0.06 per kWh * 992 kWh) = $59.52

$26.21 cost of gas + $59.52 cost of electricity = $85.73 total cost of “fuel”
- $85.73 / 15 weeks = $5.72 /week “fuel” cost

Compared to 2012 Chevy Cruze (called Volt’s gas engine cousin):

3357 miles / 40 MPG (EPA estimated best MPG) = 83.925 gallons of gas used
@ $3.76 (average cost over the last 15 weeks) = $315.94
- $315.94 / 15 weeks = $21.06 /week

Compared to my old 2003 Chevy Impala:

3357 miles / 24 MPG (The best MPG I ever got) = 139.88 gallons of gas used
@ $3.76 (average cost over the last 15 weeks) = $526.56
- $526.56 / 15 weeks = $35.10 /week

Here’s the stats just before the first fill-up of my Volt. A little over 2700 miles on 7 gallons of dealer gas.

Over 1,000 miles down…not quite 3 gallons of gas used.

Ok. So the first week with the Chevy Volt is over. It represents an average week. At this point my Impala would need to be filled up with about $55~$60 in gas. The 0.9 gals of gas used this week were all on that first Saturday night when I picked it up from the dealer (they didn’t have it charged). So the last 7 days have been gas free! Full disclosure: I’ve spoke to NV Energy and got on the special hybrid/electric vehicle rate, so this week did cost me $3 in electricity.

We had a high profile Novell NetWare to Microsoft Server 2008 migration today. It went very well. Unfortunately it marked the end of my involvement with a group at work that I really enjoyed being a part of. It had been at least 5 years since I’ve looked forward to work as much as I have lately, alas management would rather I perform a different function and I am at their disposal. So I bid the fine members of CDM a fond farewell. I know they are excited to welcome their new member and hope that circumstances allow me to work with them again in the future.
